About the Program
The Brownsville Community Justice Center seeks to reengineer how the justice system works in Brownsville, Brooklyn. In particular, the Justice Center is dedicated to building multiple off-ramps for young people who come into contact with the justice system by providing much-needed services to young people arrested in Brownsville. The aim is to provide the kind of support that young people need to become law-abiding members of society. The goal is to reduce crime and the use of incarceration, while at the same restoring local faith in the justice system.
The Brownsville Community Justice Center is seeking a Project Director to oversee all existing programming and develop new initiatives to help prevent and reduce crime through individual and community based programs. The position requires a strong relationship builder and skilled communicator with experience leading diverse teams who can process immediate “nuts and bolts” thinking as well as long-term strategic planning, often simultaneously.
About the Position
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead the strategic planning and implementation of all Justice Center programming and services;
- Manage the Justice Center budget and fundraising efforts;
- Develop and maintain relationships with funders, government officials, and stakeholders;
- Work with local and city-wide stakeholders to expand on our place-making, workforce development and technology strategies;
- Manage existing partner relationships with the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, NYPD, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (i.e. Parole), the Brownsville Partnership and other community stakeholders;
- Identify community hot spots and support staff to develop programming that empowers residents, creates civic opportunities for youth, reduces crime and sparks community revitalization;
- Support organizing techniques used to mobilize the community to participate in activities designed to challenge and change local norms;
- Approve, develop, maintain, and track social media and marketing materials;
- Plan and oversee the execution of all Justice Center engagement activities;
- Ensure all programs are meeting or exceeding program deliverables;
- Ensure staff provides the highest quality of case management, education, training, internship, and employment services and development for Justice Center Program participants;
- Oversee engagement of Justice Center members in community and learning initiatives developed to create access and opportunities;
- Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with staff and partner agencies to ensure proper referrals and case management for Justice Center participants;
- Oversee all administration/management meetings and ensure that meeting proceedings are communicated to other Justice Center staff;
- Supervise senior program staff, while providing support for all staff, interns and volunteers;
- Oversee preparation of quarterly grant progress reports and other program reports as needed; and,
- Organize and participate in regular reviews with Center staff about program progress.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of senior level management experience or an advanced degree (MA, JD, MSW) with a minimum of 3 years of senior level management experience. Extensive supervision experience and three or more years of experience managing significant budgets and grant contracts required. Candidate must be passionate and sensitive to the needs and interests of the population and the mission and philosophy of the Justice Center while understanding of the challenges and strengths of the Brownsville neighborhood. Experience developing and overseeing programs with multiple priorities preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills, and organizational and interpersonal skills. Must be responsible, innovative, and flexible and able to exercise tact and diplomacy.
