Praise for the Center for Court Innovation
The Center for Court Innovation has worked with court and justice leaders in New York, across the nation, and around the world to generate new solutions to challenging problems. Here are some of their thoughts as the Center celebrates its 20th anniversary:
New York State Chief Judge Janet DiFiore
We are lucky to have the Center for Court Innovation in New York. Over the past 20 years, the Center has played a crucial role in making the justice system smarter, more effective, and more humane. I salute the Center for its work to define the cutting edge of court reform and look forward to partnering with them in the days ahead.
Former New York State Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman
The Center for Court Innovation’s contribution to criminal justice reform has been exemplary. Over two decades, the Center has challenged and energized
the New York State court system, giving us the tools to tackle some of today’s most pressing criminal justice concerns. More importantly, it has given countless New Yorkers the opportunity to get help, turn their lives around, and exit the criminal justice system for good. From finding alternatives to incarceration to working with some of the most vulnerable populations in the country, the Center for Court Innovation is showing us the way forward.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio
The Red Hook Community Justice Center epitomizes what I believe in, in terms of a progressive approach to public safety, bringing community and public safety professionals together to keep us all safe and to make sure in particular that we support and address the needs of our young people. What has happened here has been legendary. The Justice Center has made sure that Red Hook and other surrounding communities are safe, and that the relationship between the community and the police and other public safety professionals is strong. It made sure that we handle challenges to the maximum extent possible on a community basis, bringing community, police, and justice system together to solve problems. The fundamental idea here is that the way to fight crime, the way to ensure safety, is with the community. That has been epitomized here to great effect, and it really animates my entire view of public safety and how we have to move forward as a city.
Former United States Attorney General Eric Holder
Over the course of nearly two decades, since the very first community court opened its doors in Manhattan, combining punishment with assistance has proven to be a critical strategy in improving public safety. Community courts have been essential in guiding efforts to reduce crime, empower communities, and create opportunities. They have all proven the power of community involvement in strengthening public safety and public confidence in our justice system. I’m proud to support our community courts and the Center for Court Innovation.
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg
No one has been more effective in finding new ways to reduce recidivism than the Center for Court Innovation. The Center’s programs have touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and helped drive crime down to record lows.
Former New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton
The Brownsville Community Justice Center is a critical tool to reduce crime and increase public safety, particularly in low-income communities of color. Nothing could be more important at this particular moment in the life of New York City.
Former New York State Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye
The Center for Court Innovation works to improve public confidence in courts by nurturing and sustaining new experiments in the delivery of justice. The reverberations of the Center's work are felt throughout the court system. Through the Center, our court system is finding the most effective ways to deliver justice in this brave new world, save lives, and improve public safety.
United States Senator Cory Booker
The Center for Court Innovation is working right at the sweet spot of making America true to herself. That deserves reverence and support.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.
The Center for Court Innovation has been a resource for us in terms of idea generation. They are our partners.
New York City Councilmember Rory Lancman
The Center for Court Innovation is the envy of judicial systems across the country and at the vanguard of today’s effort to reform our country’s justice system.
Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson
The Red Hook Community Justice Center is a jewel in our community. It’s really a model for the entire country. It allows us to keep our community safe, and also makes sure that defendants are treated fairly, that they receive the services that they may need, and that the community has input in its criminal justice system.
New York City Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson
Bronx Community Solutions has really invested in our young people. They have recognized that young people deserve a second chance. They have single-handedly worked with community partners and our courts in saving young people’s lives.
NY1 Correspondent Errol Louis
I am a big supporter of the Center for Court Innovation. They really are a civic jewel. They have done yeoman’s work, without a lot of the shouting.
Bronx Criminal Court Judge Lawrence Bushing
We in the Bronx judiciary are really lucky because we have a resource like Bronx Community Solutions. It gives us neutral assessments that we can rely on, and it links defendants to effective interventions. By demonstrating that alternatives to incarceration can be effective, can be better for people coming through the system, can be better for communities, and can save the city money by reducing incarceration, Bronx Community Solutions really helps to build faith in that process so that not only does it make a difference for the clients that they’re serving, but encourages a culture change throughout the courthouse.
Right on Crime Policy Director Marc Levin
The Red Hook Community Justice Center has been terrific. It really provides a more personal form of justice, rather than large bureaucracies, and I think that’s one of the reasons it has had such good results.
Pretrial Justice Institute Executive Director Timothy Murray
Programs such as the Midtown Community Court show that justice can work, justice can be fair, safe, and effective. We can confront problems as a society, work collaboratively to solve them, rather than hiding behind the doors of a courthouse and saying “We only do things one way in here.” The Center for Court Innovation has proven that there are many ways to solve problems, none more beautiful than the Midtown Community Court.
