Description The Center for Court Innovation, a project of the Fund for the City of New York, is a unique public-private partnership that promotes new thinking about how courts and criminal justice agencies can aid victims, change the behavior of offenders, and strengthen communities. The Center creates demonstration projects that test new approaches to problems that have resisted conventional solutions. The Center’s problem-solving courts include the nation’s first community court (Midtown Community Court), as well as drug courts, domestic violence courts, youth courts, mental health courts, and others. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research on topics of justice reform and provides consulting services to criminal justice innovators. The Newark Community Court is a collaboration of the City of Newark and the Center for Court Innovation, and its mission is to respond constructively to low-level crime.

Stationed primarily in the courtroom, the Resource Coordinator serves as the primary liaison and representative between clinical and alternative sanction staff and court room staff. S/he must be well versed in all alternative sanction options and services at the court. The Resource Coordinator must assess defendants to ensure the appropriateness of alternative sanction recommendations. As the public representative of the Newark Community Court, the Resource Coordinator must be prepared to provide information on programs and services, respond to questions or concerns by courtroom staff, visitors or the public.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    Reporting to the Clinical Director, the Resource Coordinator serves as the primary liaison and representative between clinical staff and court room staff. The Resource Coordinator is responsible for assessing the suitability of defendants who are arraigned at the court for various alternative sanctions and making appropriate recommendations to the judge. Responsibilities include:
    • Assisting the judge in identifying appropriate community service/social service sanctions for defendants, such as mandated drug treatment as an alternative to incarceration;
    • Conducting mental health and substance abuse assessments;
    • Conducting individual counseling and group sessions, as needed;
    • Serving as an intermediary between the court, community service and court-based social services;
    • Reporting on compliance to judges, and providing detailed case information when individuals are returned to the courts on a warrant;
    • Participating in community outreach, including attending community meetings and maintaining relationships with residents, youth programs, schools, police, government, non-profit agencies and community-based organizations;
    • Assisting in troubleshooting and problem solving with respect to courtroom’s daily activities;
    • and preparing and submitting to court notices of sentence satisfaction and violation notices, compliance audits, and reports.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred. Candidate must have excellent communication and writing skills, proficient in Microsoft Office applications, and strong interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will have experience in both the social service and criminal justice sectors.
Salary Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
